‘The first rule of MyFilmClub is: you DO talk about MyFilmClub’
Given the size and scope of the UK film industry, you’d think someone would’ve found a way to make cinema-going more connected by now. To have taken our national love of film and made it social.
Surprisingly not. Therefore, we introduce to you MyFilmClub® – the UK’s first film lovers’ app.
MyFilmClub® is the ultimate app for film buffs. It brings together finding films and booking tickets, ordering VOD and Blu-ray/DVDs, with the freedom to chat with friends, create film clubs, and arrange meet-ups. You can even organise your own screenings, find local cinema events or event cinema, enter competitions, catch up on the latest film news and receive notifications about when your favourite film has tickets on sale. It also includes the best bits of WhatsApp and Citymapper and smashes them into one app. Making the big screen properly accessible from your small screen for the first time.
Available to download on iPhone, iPad and Android now, MyFilmClub® makes the act of finding, seeing and sharing films easier, more sociable and more fun.
The first rule of MyFilmClub®? You DO talk about MyFilmClub®.

MyFilmClub® was imagined and created by Wez Merchant, an entertainment company entrepreneur who saw a gap in the market for a space where cinema fans could talk about, watch and enjoy movies with other like-minded people. Under The Influence Of…Ltd is the app’s parent company.
The app covers:
- Journey planning
- Instant Messaging
- Event cinema
- Theatrical releases
- Home Entertainment releases
- Ticket bookings
Why and how?
Founder of MyFilmClub’s Wez Merchant says:
“It came to me one day whilst I was looking around the train carriage and all I could see was everyone’s heads buried in their phones. We have become like robots using the amazing tool to simply keep our speeding thoughts occupied. We have no concentra…..sorry, we have no concentration anymore.”
With his film industry background, Wez then started to piece things together:
“There was not a good or decent film app available. There have been a few attempts but they have fallen by the wayside because there has been no social context to them – they have been all about sales up until now and made by people who have all the tech know-how but don’t know how to give it personality. That’s when MyFilmClub® was born. I wanted to create an app which provided useful film information and content but also one which had a social conscience as well as reminding people of the good old days when contacting someone required military planning. I’m getting older, grumpier and finding myself harking back to simpler times – I’m basically turning into my Dad.”
“It’s using the technology we have at our disposal to actually get people to detach from their phones, by having real interactions, meeting new people and catching up with old friends. If your partner doesn’t want to see the latest horror, and you don’t want to go on your own, then you can put out a message to your local group and see if anyone else fancies meeting you there. Hopefully this will be a good combatant against piracy too as it will help to stop the idea that you can just find a stream and download a terrible copy – get out and enjoy the experience rather than watch Logan, shot at an angle, with Japanese subtitles, muffled sound and people getting in the way as they get up to go to the loo”.
MyFilmClub® is partnering with The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) as its official charity and will donate 10% of any profits it generates. The CTBF supports those within the film and television industries facing personal or career challenges of illness, injury, unemployment or finances as well as aiding talent through the likes of the John Brabourne Awards.
“The CTBF are excited to be the charity partner of MyFilmClub®. Their innovative platform will bring together through their love of film, while helping us to support the people who make films happen” says D’Arcy Myers, Interim Chief Executive, The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF).
MyFilmClub® are also supporters of Heads Together. Employees are encouraged to talk about their mental health concerns and will be helping raise awareness by putting on a screening of some of the #OKTOSAY films in May in North London. It is hoped that the app encourages users to get out and meet other people through a combined love of film, and chat with them via the app’s club functionality. “Going out and ‘being in the world’ when you’re afraid, anxious and stuck inside your head can be daunting. So it’s great to see apps like MyFilmClub® using technology to enable those who are struggling, to connect with others and enjoy something they love in a simple, social and manageable way” says Jon Salmon, Mental Health Advocate from #TeamHeadsTogether.
MyFilmClub® cleverly uses a number of platforms in existence to consumers and industry professionals alike, including ourscreen, which enables film fans to take control of their local cinema in three easy steps (pick a film – decide where and when – share your screening) ” MyFilmClub® is an excellent idea; anything that – like ourscreen – aims to make watching films at your local cinema easier, is serving a fantastic purpose. That’s why we were so keen to be involved in the app” says David Kapur, co-founder of ourscreen.
MyFilmClub® links to the official cinema platforms for cinema showtimes and booking links. These official ticketing platforms are built by Powster, who work with all six major movie studios and over independent distributors globally. “Powster is delighted to support MyFilmClub® by allowing users to link directly to their official movie platforms. Cinemagoers will be able to discover where the movie is playing and book tickets for their favourite screenings. As an advocate of innovation in cinema, Powster is keen to see how the MyFilmClub® app uses new technology to improve the cinema-going experience” says Tim Stephens, Director of Production at Powster.
As well as reading up on MyFilmClub’s own news and reviews, users can also catch up on other film news sources such as the award winning LiveForFilms website.”It is a pleasure and an honour for Live for Films to be involved with such a cool movie app” enthuses Phil Edwards, Founder, LiveForFilms
Under The Influence Of… hired Milk Bar Studios to develop the app and listen to Wez’s natterings during its creation. Simon Hume, Founder of Milk Bar Studios , said “It’s been an absolute joy to develop MyFilmClub®, we can’t wait to get it into users hands and continuing its development in the months and years to come.”
