MUBI, the global distributor and curated film streaming service has announced the UK and Ireland exclusive streaming premiere for Zhang Yimou’s highly anticipated One Second on 16 September 2022, which follows the film’s English premiere at Bristol’s Cinema Rediscovered Festival on 23 July 2022.
The long-awaited latest feature from award-winning director Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), One Second is a tragicomic tale in the vein of Cinema Paradiso, set during the Chinese cultural revolution. The film follows an escaped convict in Northwestern China, seeking out a film reel which contains footage of his estranged daughter. After arriving in a nearby village, he crosses paths with a homeless girl who is also desperate for the film reel and will steal it by any means. Heartfelt with touches of droll humour, Zhang Yimou’s latest feature is a bittersweet love letter to the power of cinema on both a personal and collective level.
One of the most influential filmmakers in China, BAFTA-award winning and Oscar-nominated director Zhang Yimou has received recognition from around the world including nominations for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards for Ju Dou in 1991 and Raise The Red Lantern in 1992. Zhang is also known for ushering a new era of blockbusters to Chinese cinema starting with his martial arts epic Hero (2002) followed by the equally successful House of Flying Daggers (2004), and Curse of the Golden Flower (2006).
Cinema Rediscovered is Bristol Watershed’s annual festival showcasing brand new restorations, contemporary classics and film print rarities from around the globe, and it returns for its sixth bumper edition in and around Bristol UNESCO City of Film from Wed 20 – Sun 24 July.
