MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, is pleased to announce that Carla Simón’s (Summer 1993) Alcarràs will open theatrically in the UK and Ireland on 6 January 2023. The film, which won the Golden Bear award at this year’s Berlinale and is nominated for Best European FIlm, Best European Screenwriter, and the European University Film Award at the 2022 European Film Awards, will premiere on MUBI later next year.
As far as they can remember, the Solé family have spent every summer picking the peaches from their orchard in Alcarràs, a small village in Spain. But this year’s crop could be their last,as they face eviction. The new plans for the land include cutting down the peach trees and installing solar panels, which causes a rift within the large tight-knit family. For the first time, they face an uncertain future and risk losing more than their home.
Carla Simón’s second feature, following the international success of Summer 1993 (2017) is inspired by her own farming family from Alcarràs in the Catalonian region of Spain. All members of the extended Solé family, young and old alike, are played by non-professional actors speaking the Catalan dialect specific to the area.
Alcarràs received its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival 2022 and will be released in UK & Irish cinemas on 6 January 2023.
