To mark the tenth anniversary of the EU referendum that reshaped modern British politics, Guerilla Films is delighted to announce that its acclaimed documentary, POSTCARDS FROM THE 48%, is now available to watch on the Guerilla Docs YouTube channel. Featuring contributions from leading political figures, writers, academics and campaigners, the documentary revisits the events, debates and lasting consequences of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union through the perspectives of the 48% who voted to remain.
POSTCARDS FROM THE 48% is a thought-provoking documentary from filmmaker David Wilkinson. It features prominent voices including Alastair Campbell, Nick Clegg, Bob Geldof, Miriam Margolyes, Ian McEwan, A. C. Grayling, Vince Cable and dozens of campaigners, academics, journalists and ordinary citizens from across the United Kingdom.
Made by and for those who voted to remain in the European Union following the 2016 Brexit referendum, the film gives voice to the 48% of voters whose perspectives were often overshadowed in the years that followed. Through interviews, personal stories and expert commentary, the documentary seeks to challenge the dominant Brexit narrative. It explores the social, political and economic consequences of leaving the EU, and demonstrates to audiences across Europe that nearly half of the UK electorate continues to believe in a shared European future.
On the 23rd June 2016, the UK voted by 52% to 48% to Leave the European Union.
POSTCARDS FROM THE 48% is a documentary film made by and featuring those who voted Remain, the 48%, to show the other 27 EU Member States that it was far from a landslide victory and just why we are fighting to stay part of the EU.
Speaking on the release, director David Wilkinson said “When POSTCARDS FROM THE 48% played in over 50 cinemas in the UK, at almost every screening, some who voted Leave turned up. Although a few were downright hostile, most were not, and some engaged in thought-provoking discussions. A small number changed their minds, but the majority didn’t.
One man, who voted Leave, was so incensed after watching the film because he did not know all the facts that he went and signed the People’s Vote petition for a second vote, something Brexiters Jacob Rees-Mogg, David Davis and John Redwood had all suggested at one time. Although he had not changed his mind and would still vote Leave, he said people had been lied to, and he felt there should be another vote in which the truth could be put before the public.
Talking to some of those who voted Leave, then I realised that we were not the ‘Broken Britain’ as many believed. I have therefore decided to give the film away for free to begin on the anniversary of the vote, as I would like to offer many more Leave voters an opportunity to watch and reflect now that Brexit has played out, to see what they think 10 years on, and whether it was a mistake. If they don’t, then so be it. My feeling is that a sizeable proportion would vote differently. How many? That is the question.”
