A nice featurette has just hit the web about Wardaddy and his tank.
It covers the vehicles they have on screen. Including the first time we have seen a real Tiger tank on film. Using the only running one of its type in the world. It lives at the Bobbington tank museum in the UK.
With a real tank it gives a whole new dimension to the film. It’s not a wooden mock-up put over a modern tank. It’s the real thing that the Sherman fought against 70 years ago.
The tiger used, Tiger 101, has a history all of its own. It was the first Tiger captured by the Allies in the west in the Second World War. A far superior tank than the Sherman. A real David vs Goliath battle that seems to come out in the clips that are in the featurette.
It was only won after 50,000 Shermans finally destroyed the 1,500 Tiger tanks. Sometimes with a loss rate of 90%! 33 Shermans for each Tiger. An amazing number advantage. Even so, it was only just enough to eliminate the threat.
April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Outnumbered and outgunned, and with a rookie soldier thrust into their platoon, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.
