MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, is pleased to announce the UK and Ireland release date for Magnus von Horn’s (The Here After, Sweat) latest feature film. Inspired by true events, The Girl With The Needle, will open in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 10 January 2025.
The Girl with the Needle, directed by Magnus von Horn and co-written by Line Langebek Knudsen and Magnus von Horn, received its World Premiere in Competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and stars Vic Carmen Sonne (Neon Heart, Godland), Trine Dyrholm (The Commune, Queen of Hearts, Mary and George), Besir Zeciri (Wildland), and Joachim Fjelstrup (Itsi Bitsi).
Young factory worker Karoline is struggling to survive in post-WWI Copenhagen. When she ends up unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, the charismatic Dagmar takes her in as a wet-nurse at an underground adoption agency which finds foster homes for unwanted children. A deep connection forms between them, until a shocking discovery suddenly shatters Karoline’s world.
Inspired by a true story and directed by Magnus von Horn (Sweat) The Girl With The Needle is a haunting and profound look at one woman’s search for love and morality.
Magnus von Horn is a graduate of the Polish National Film School in Lodz where he is currently also a teacher. Already with his short films, he established himself internationally as a promising director presenting films at festivals such as Sundance and Locarno. Finding it inspiring to work in different languages, his feature film debut, The Here After, was in Swedish and premiered at Director’s Fortnight in Cannes 2015; it also earned him the Swedish Guldbaggen award for best director and best film. His second feature film, Sweat, was in Polish and part of the Cannes official selection in 2020.
