Mubi Announces Issue 2 of its Film Magazine “Notebook”

MUBI, the global streaming service, production company and film distributor has today announced the second issue of their print-only magazine NOTEBOOK. Available in January 2023, the issue can now be pre-ordered here.

Issue 2 will have two wraparound cover options, both featuring photography from the acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook. In addition to selecting the cover photography for this issue, the magazine will also include a new essay from Director Park with beautiful original photography taken by him.

The latest edition will creatively explore the art and culture of film from cinema’s earliest days through to the current era, opening with a special focus in text and images on the history of the cinematic “phantom ride,” featuring a contribution by the renowned professor and early cinema expert Tom Gunning.

NOTEBOOK Issue 2 will also delve into the theme of travel, with highlights including never-before-published extracts from Michelangelo Antonioni’s travel diary to Los Angeles, a conversation about a summer European art exhibition tour by Chinese filmmaker Bo Wang, Hong Kong scholar and filmmaker Pan Lu, and British-Japanese curator and writer Julian Ross, an illustrated and annotated top-down painting of the main concourse of the Grand Central Terminal in New York – specially commissioned from artist Boryana Ilieva (a.k.a. Floor Plan Croissant), an illustrated journal from animator and cartoonist Dash Shaw, detailing a trip to Bergman’s beloved Fårö island, as well as an interactive game of films and the places they took audiences when shown at Buenos Aires’ iconic Sala Leopoldo Lugones cinema. This issue will also showcase self-designed VHS covers and film posters by the acclaimed mid-century American photographer and filmmaker Danny Lyon, plus a text from him on self-distribution as an independent artist.

NOTEBOOK provides a diverse curation of writing, photographs, original translations, and other unique material to illuminate what makes film exciting, moving, and relevant. With a design-forward approach, featuring renowned international writers and filmmakers and artists who are at the forefront of international cinema, the magazine is a showcase for experimental, reflective, and surprising approaches to film culture.

NOTEBOOK magazine is edited by Daniel Kasman and features different and exclusive editorial to the online publication, which launched in 2007 when MUBI was founded. NOTEBOOK is developed, designed and published in-house at MUBI, with Davide Cazzaro serving as the magazine’s Deputy Editor and Publishing Manager and Pablo Martin as Creative Director.
