Tull Stories, in association with Jon Sanders Films, are delighted to announce that A Clever Woman will be released in UK Cinemas from 21st April.
Beguiling and free-spirited, A Clever Woman is an uplifting and emotionally intense film exploring sisterly bonds and the experience of mourning a loved one.
Directed by Jon Sanders and co-written with Anna Mottram (Back to the Garden, Painted Angels), A Clever Woman tells the story of sisters and performance artists Phoebe (Josie Lawrence – Enchanted April) and Dot (Tanya Myers – Control, A Change in the Weather), who have returned to their family home on the Isle of Wight a year after the death of their mother, an accomplished composer.
As they prepare the family home for sale, reminisce and clear decades of family clutter, they start to work on a site-specific performance piece about their complex relationship with their mother and her serial infidelities. The piece incorporates the mother’s compositions for the pianola, including songs using the poems of the Victorian feminist, Mary Coleridge.
Together with house-sitting musician Tom and their producer/curator Monica, the sisters are faced with the very real ghosts of the past and the haunting presence of their mother’s music still living through the pianola.
At once a celebration and a lament, Sanders’ and Mottram’s improvised production style lends itself perfectly to a story that is playful, emotionally raw and always surprising.
Jonny Tull, founder of Tull Stories, commented: “Tull Stories is built on a foundation of independent cinema exhibition in the UK, and we’re delighted to be working with Jon and Anna on their film A Clever Woman. These are filmmakers who have created exciting, inspiring work in a truly independent and unique fashion. We can’t wait to take A Clever Woman to cinemas, and to celebrate these talented artists and their oeuvre.”
