Into the Woods makes Box Office Magic in the US

Into The Woods Box Office WinnerThe musical take on The Brothers Grimm opened over Christmas in the UK to amazing figures. It became the biggest ever US opening for a screen adaptation of a Broadway musical in history. It took $31 million, gross, over 3 days and after 4 it had made another $15.1 million, taking it to $46.1 million

The previous record holders were Les Miserables in 2012 and Mamma Mia in 2008. They took $27.3 and $27.8 million over the opening 3 days. I have to assume that’s in unadjusted Dollars. Otherwise Mamma Mia would have beaten Into The Woods.

The film has now well and truly beaten the previous record holder Mamma Mia, which opened to a $27.8M three-day gross in 2008, as well as the $27.3M opening weekend figure for Les Miserables in 2012.

Not only that, it was the 4th biggest Christmas day opening film ever in the US.

The film is a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters’ wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel — all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch who has put a curse on them.
